"The Aviator" is an interpretation of a image by an unknown photographer using soft pastel and pastel pencils on Colourfix pastelboard. This image attracted me because his character shines through and he must have appealed to others as he sold very quickly. I enjoyed capturing the details and creating a 3D effect in the completed painting using layers of colour.

Spiros Baras
"After reading Matsuo Basho’s diary carefully over a year, Spiros Baras explored haiku poetry for the first time. He really wanted to create something unique, totally different from traditional haiku paintings. He decided to go digital.
Departure (depicted in the picture) is the first artwork of the series, The Records of a Weather-Exposed Skeleton. The collection is titled after Basho’s diary and the artwork is inspired by the first scene of the diary which describes Basho’s departure for his journey."

"I've always been obsessed with medieval manuscripts and early book illustrations. So I've ended up drawing a lot from the past then mixing things up with a little bit of day time television, over heard conversations, the arguments I have with myself and all the strange and surreal things I see in our confusing modern world.
This picture is a linocut print of an Elizabethan Lady. I haven't found out her name yet but she looks like she was a very nice lady. I spend a lot of time these days researching old pictures like this one online. It's amazing what's out there."

My work is a mixture of satire and everyday life but presented through a thoughtful process of greater meaning. While a lot of my work is mono tones I believe that in itself is a mockery of how we as a society should be. It is for the observer to come to conclusions and realisation different from all those around them though it may seem basic. Colour is something that is very interesting but even more so why and when it should be used.
