Maarja Nuut is a singer from Estonia with breathtaking music. Her songs combine traditional songs, and stories with live electronics to create an intricate layered soundscape in a space where minimalism and experimental music meet the village musical traditions of pre-war Europe.
Maarja Nuut is not your average violinist. Her music is eclectic and rather unique, crafting stunning sonic imageries by blending different genres and techniques in a very special way. Her melodies are inspired by sources such as traditional pre-war European folk music, but modern minimalism also plays a big part on her particular sound and compositional approach.
For instance, Maarja is known to blend is traditional musicianship and academic-level violin skills with innovative technology, such as live looping, in order to achieve beautiful cascading melodies, and layers upon layers of sound.
She excels at harmonizing different violin parts, creating haunting and blissful melodic drones. Often times, she would use her bare vocals as a way to complement the beautiful string melodies, remind the audience of artists as diverse as Sigur Ros, Enya and Mum, just to mention but a few.
One of the best things about Maarja’s music is certainly the tantalizing combination of tradition and innovation, which defines her sound and vision in a very special way.
